Acclaimed artist Julian Mason is set to present his stunning new exhibition - A Painted Day - at Morningside Gallery, Edinburgh beginning this weekend from September 7 to 21.

Julian’s new collection of paintings explore the rugged isolation and beauty of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Out in all weathers with canvases strapped to his back, Julian enjoys the challenges of painting outdoors as much as the rewards – the feeling that he is a part of the landscape he is painting.

The fleeting changes in weather and light mean it is impossible to capture a particular moment in the way a camera might; what Julian paints is the feeling and atmosphere of the whole day, conveying the majesty and tranquillity of some of Scotland’s most beautiful mountains and coastlines.

Born in 1971 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Julian Mason was introduced to landscape painting by a college lecturer at the age of 21 whilst studying graphic design in Falmouth. Julian is dedicated to communicating his love of the landscape through his paintings.

His work endeavours to capture the atmospheric effects of a scene and how the elements influence the landscape. From dramatic views of Scotland to seascapes of Cornwall, each painting is the culmination of technical skill mixed with the insatiable desire to invite an equally passionate response from the viewer. His work is enjoyed by many private collectors on these shores and beyond.

Julian’s paintings reflect the true glory of the landscape, often depicting rugged mountainous scenes with fast moving skies and also gentle sunsets and trees and flowers.

Working in oil and painting en plein air, Julian communicates his love of the landscape through his paintings. Julian’s keen eye and expert application of oil on canvas are combined to produce work of both depth and integrity that convey the enigmatic power and majestic beauty of this most stunning area of the British Isles.

Julian lives in Cheshire with his wife and two daughters and spends the majority of his working time in all weathers and all seasons.
