Bullocks at St Boswells yesterday averaged 307p/kg and sold to 326p/kg, while heifers averaged 303p/kg and sold to 340p/kg, and cast cows averaged 211p/kg and sold to 247p/kg or £230 gross. Lambs averaged 295p/kg or £138/head and sold to 350p/head for Beltexes, with cast sheep averaging £115/head and selling to £209 for a Texel ewe. Heavy ewes averaged £158/head, while light ewes averaged £111/head and sold to £139.
Prime lambs at Ayr yesterday continued to meet with demand, averaging 282p/kg or £127/head and selling to £169/head for a pen of Texels from Farden or 321p/kg for Beltexes from Ardoch and Threepland Farms, and Mules peaked at £143/head for High Craighead. Cast ewes sold to £300 for a Texel from High Langside while tups peaked at £134 for a Texel from Whin, and Scotch Mules sold to £161 for Pennyglen. Blackies sold to £110/head for Kittochside, and Suffolk crosses achieved £192/head for Barneil.
Prime heifers at Carlisle yesterday averaged 277p/kg and sold to 326p/kg, while bullocks averaged 279p/kg and sold to 327p/kg, and young bulls averaged 258p/kg and sold to 322p/kg. Cast beef and dairy cows averaged 208p/kg and 148p/kg respectively. Lambs averaged 311p/kg and sold to 478p/kg or £215/head, and lowland ewes averaged £126/head and peaked at £162 for a Hill Cheviot.
Store lambs at Lanark on Friday maintained their recent high rates, averaging £79/head and selling to £139 for a Texel from Ford Farm while Blackies sold to £88 gross for Auchenfruith. Yesterday’s sale saw prime heifers firming slightly to an average of 309p/kg and selling to 341p/kg for a Limousin, while cast beef cows averaged 199p/kg and cast dairy cows averaged 149p/kg. Lambs dropped slightly on the week to an average of 297p/kg and sold to 343p/kg or £196/head, while cast ewes averaged £93/head and sold to £301 for a Texel, and Blackie ewes peaked at £114.
Scotch Mule gimmers at Dumfries on Thursday averaged £232/head, up £60/head on the year, and sold to £270 gross for Grennan. Store lambs sold to £123/head for Texels from Pilmuir with North Country Cheviots peaked at £88.
Cast cows at Longtown on Thursday continued to meet with demand, although weathered types met some resistance, topping at £1,568 for an Angus from Kilnhill. Dairy cows peaked at £1,378/head for Friesians from Hethermill and Shorthorns sold to £1,313/head for Meikle Whitriggs. Lambs sold to 440p/kg for High Dalrioch or to £210/head for Texels from Wester Parkgate.
