A festival to mark the opening of the new Govan-Partick bridge will be held this weekend with music and celebrations throughout the day.

The Govan Footbridge Festival is a one-off event to celebrate the opening of the bridge and will take place on Saturday, September 7 with the streets set to be filled. Some of Scotland’s most established talent will perform on two stages across the day including The Red Chilli Pipers.

The cultural spectacle is expected to bring around 5,000 visitors to the area which will see plenty of celebration throughout the streets of Govan with organisers now confirming times and details of who will appear on stage.

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are one of those who will appear while Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five as well as Shooglenifty will all be on stage throughout the day.

It will kick-off with a Govan Road Ceilidh with the Charlie Kirkpatrick before Ben Walker, Colonel Mustard, Horse McDonald, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Shooglenifty round off the day on the Govan Road Stage.

The Footbridge Plaza stage will include plenty of local talent too with community and school choirs performing there, before local singer songwriters including TikTok star Hawaii FIVO. Musicians in Exile as well as local rappers CCTV, SVG and AJ40 will all perform too.

Street music from Brass Aye and the Govan Community Pipe Band will also be entertaining people while there will be family activities, games and giveaways as well as a range of stalls representing local charities and organisations for visitors to discover.

The footbridge, which has been two years in the making and will officially open on Friday September 6, will connect Govan’s Water Row directly to the Transport Museum, The Tall Ship Glenlee and Clydebuilt Festival, making Govan Subway the nearest transport hub to those attractions.

Paul MacAlindin, organiser of the Govan Footbridge Festival, said: “Plans for Govan Footbridge Festival are coming together incredibly well and it feels fantastic to be able to share further details about what we’ve got planned across the day. Govan is ready to put its best foot forward and showcase the music, warmth, vibrancy and diversity of our neighbourhood with pride. This festival is a coming-together of people from across the city and beyond and a monumental moment for the people of Glasgow – come join us to mark the occasion this weekend.”
