A thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Met Office for the South of Scotland today.

The yellow alert has been in effect from 4 am this morning, and was originally in place until 9pm.  But after an update from the Met Office, it will now last until midnight, bringing chances of flooding and power cuts in certain areas.

Affected areas include Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders Dumfries and Galloway, and small parts of Strathclyde.

The forecaster has also warned that some public transport could be liable to disruption or cancellation, and spray on roads will lead to difficult driving conditions.

Heavy periods of rain will also be frequent throughout the day.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Through today, areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move north across England, into parts of Wales and later into Scotland.

“The extent of these thunderstorms remains very uncertain and whilst many places will miss them, some places may see 30 to 40 mm of rainfall in less than an hour and perhaps over 60-80 mm in one or two places.

“Frequent lightning strikes and hail will be additional hazards.”
