A fly-on-the-wall documentary that follows the first crowning and inauguration ceremony of an ancient Scottish clan for more than 300 years has premiered in Hollywood.

The feature-length documentary was backed by Screen Scotland and recently debuted at a special screening at Los Angeles’ Lumiere Cinema as part of the Tartan Film Festival. The Buchanans are one of the world’s largest and most ancient clan and they had plenty of members at the event.

For 300 years the clan had been without a chief until it recentlyc hanged with the inauguration of Scottish landowner Mike Buchanan along with his wife Paul and their teenage family. The documentary follows the inauguration which was a three-day event where ceremony and ritual are freely invented.

A hidden world of British wealth and privilege unfolds as the family uncover and invent fresh entitlements for the new role, and reveal whether or not they can pull it all off.

To celebrate the premiere, the new chief made the journey from the clan’s Cambusmore Estate in Perthshire along with his wife and three of their children. The clan boasts an international community of more than five million people and the premiere was a meeting place for members from across the globe from Mexico to Australia.

The new chief said: “‘Meet the Buchanans’ not only showcases the rich heritage of our clan, it also serves as a bridge connecting our storied past to the vibrant present. Premiering as part of the Tartan Film Festival has given us an incredible opportunity to promote Scotland to a global audience and share our traditions, landscapes and spirit with the world.

“America has a unique affinity with the quirks, nuances and heritage of Scottish culture and it’s an honour to be premiering Meet the Buchanans in the home of showbusiness in celebration of that relationship.”

The documentary is co-directed and produced by BAFTA award-winning Barbara Orton, with the film originally commissioned by BBC Scotland to follow the inauguration of the clan’s new chief after decades of genealogical research to identify the next heir.

It follows the family in the run-up to the chief’s crowning ceremony and features clan members from across the globe who flocked to Scotland to join in the festivities last year. The Tartan Film Festival is organised by the St Andrew’s Society of Los Angeles and celebrates the best in Scottish cinema while promoting the heritage and culture of Scotland across its diaspora audience in the United States.

‘Meet The Buchanans’ is also set to be screened at the upcoming Pleasanton Highland Games in California and has been announced as the lead title in Macrobert’s Central Scotland Documentary Festival taking place in Stirling, Scotland, later this year.
