A larger show of lambs at Ayr yesterday met with plenty of demand, particularly for well-fleshed types that sold to £174/head for Suffolks from Clonbeith or 331p/kg for Beltexes from Gass.
Cast sheep sold to £241 for a Texel from Helentongate, while tups peaked at £222 for the same breed from Tormitchell Farms, and mules topped at £157/head for Cheviots from Castle Mains. Scotch Mules sold to £140 for Boghouse and hill ewes peaked at £125/head for Blackies from Rankinston.
Bullocks at St Boswells yesterday averaged 301p/kg and sold to 328p/kg while heifers averaged 304p/kg and sold to 332p/kg, and cast cows averaged 209p/kg and sold to 249p/kg or £1,944 gross. Lambs dropped by 15p/head on the week to an average of 296p/kg and sold to £180/head or 367p/kg for Beltexes, while cast sheep averaged £115/head and sold to £222 for a Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £156/head, with light ewes averaging £110/head and selling to £157.
Prime beef-bred heifers at Lanark yesterday rose by 3p/head on the week to average 306p/kg and sold to 340p/kg for a Limousin, while beef-bred bullocks rose by 2p/head on the week to an average of 299p/kg and sold to 322p/kg, again for a Limousin, and black and white bullocks averaged 252p/kg and sold to 265p/kg. Cast beef and dairy cows averaged 189p/kg and 149p/kg respectively, while new season lambs averaged 301p/kg, virtually unchanged on the week, and sold 408p/kg or £198/head.
All classes of breeding sheep at Newton Stewart on Friday saw a rise on the year and were easily sold to a peak of £200/head for pens of Mule gimmers from both Gass and Traboyack, while Scotch Mule ewe lambs sold to £132/head for St Ninian’s Grove. Stock ewes sold to £114/head for Mules from Airiesknow with five-crop ewes peaking at £108/head for Bardrochwood. Store lambs averaged £100/head (up £18/head on the year) and sold to £132/head for Suffolks from Barncorkrie.
At its annual store lamb sale on Thursday, Dingwall mart sold wedder lambs to an average of £76/head and a peak of £110/gross for Midfearn Farms, while Cheviot ewe lambs averaged £77/head and sold to £138 gross for White Bridge Cottage, and Texel lambs averaged £90/head and sold to £132 for Invercharron Farm. Other breeds averaged £77/head and sold to £120/head for a pen of crosses from Corslet.
