A Hebridean distiller has expanded its reach across the UK by securing new and expanded supermarket deals.

Isle of Barra Distillers has seen its Atlantic Gin increase its presence in Waitrose to 209 stores across the UK and win a new listing with Sainsbury’s in Scotland. The latter has listed the independent, family-owned distiller’s Atlantic Gin and Hebridean Vodka brands.

The company, which makes its gin, vodka and Island Dark rum at Castlebay, was founded by Katie and Michael Morrison in 2017. The husband-and-wife duo, and Barra natives, established Scotland’s most westerly distillery to create a future for their family and generations to come.

Michael Morrison said: “It’s been great to see sales across the UK and beyond continue to grow - especially within major supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Our Atlantic Gin was initially listed in 127 Waitrose stores but due to exceptionally strong sales and our team’s commitment to the listing, we were pleased to discover that we would be stocked in 209 stores across the UK after the end-of-year review. As a challenger brand, it's a massive result and a testament to what we are doing here on Barra.

“It’s an exciting time for Isle of Barra Distillers as we continue to expand production from our island home, allowing us to share the essence of our Hebridean island. When my wife Katie and I founded Isle of Barra Distillers, our goal was always to create something that not only we can be proud of but that the wider Barra community can be proud of, giving back to our thriving island home.”

Earlier this year, Isle of Barra Distillers announced it had raised nearly £1.13m through its share offer. The funds are set to be used to expand the business and begin work on a new custom-built single malt whisky and gin distillery.

The company’s Atlantic Gin is distilled using locally hand-harvested Carrageen Seaweed sourced sustainably from the shores surrounding the distillery’s island home.
