Lambs at Newton Stewart yesterday averaged 297p/kg or £131/head and sold to £171/head for Texels from Viewhills or 314p/kg for the same breed from Blairshinnoch. Cast sheep peaked at £168 for a Texel from Boreland, with tups peaking at £140 for a Suffolk from Smallmuir.
Prime heifers at Dingwall on Tuesday averaged 307p/kg and sold to 314p/kg for Limousin crosses from Ashely or £1,704 gross for another from the same home. New season lambs sold to 312p/kg or £157 gross while feeding sheep peaked at £248.
Breeding cattle at Longtown on Tuesday topped at £1,750 for a Hereford cow with calf at foot from Border Rigg, who also sold Angus cows with calves to £1,600. Stores peaked at £1,780 for an Angus heifer from Fell House, who also topped the bulls at £1,610 for an Angus, while bullocks peaked at £1,750 for a British Blue from Allfornaught.
Yearlings sold to £1,680 for a British Blue cross heifer from Stocksfield, and store lambs peaked at £148/head for Texel crosses from Braehead. Breeding sheep sold to £250/head for Northumberland bred stock mule gimmers from Cairness Ltd.
New season lambs at Huntly on Tuesday averaged 277p/kg or £133/head and sold to 335p/kg for Beltexes from Mains of Culsh or to £150/head for Upper Cook, while ewes sold to £222 for a pure Texel from Porterstown.
Despite many third draws being forwarded, lambs sold well at Oban on Tuesday to an average of £88/head (up £21/head on the year) and sold to £125/head for Texels from Baligrundle. Feeding sheep also met with a pleasing trade.
Prime heifers at Kirkwall on Monday peaked at 319p/kg for a 600kg Charolais from South Seatter, while steers sold to 308p/kg for a 625kg Limousin from Huan, and OTM cows averaged 193p/kg and sold to 230p/kg for a 785kg Limousin from Castle and sold to £1,900 for an Aberdeen Angus from Elsness.
Bulls also sold to £1,900, this time for a Simmental from Fea, and prime lambs averaged 286p/kg or £130/head and sold to 306p/kg for Texels from Cotland or £159/head for the same breed from Lower Cornquoy. And store lambs averaged £73/head and sold to £102/head for Suffolks from Selwick, with cast sheep peaking at £196 for a Texel ewe from Nearhouse.
Bullocks at Lochboisdale on Monday averaged £1,121/head – up £239/head on the year – and sold to £1,550 for a Limousin cross from Carnan while heifers averaged £933/head and sold to £1,440 for a Simmental cross from Bornish House. Ewes and tups sold to £150/head for Cheviot Mule ewes from Eoligarry while hoggs peaked at an impressive £156 for a Texel cross from Bornish.
