Red Bull will put 100 St Andrews University students to the test as part of a unique sprinting challenge up a greased mast to be crowned ‘hero of their campus’.

The extreme capture the flag challenge has been launched by Red Bull and will test the competitors’ speed, skill and determination. It will take place at St Andrews Harbour on September 21 with applications to participate opening up on September 9.

The 100 participants will then be randomly selected from those who apply and they do have to attend the university.

It will take place between 12pm and 4pm on that day with competitors attempted to grab a flag at the end of a greased mast situated in the harbour. The competition is part of Red Bull’s ‘Up The Mast’ series which has been successful in Turkey and the USA already with footage of it widely shared online and showing the risks people have to take.

The competition will consist of two high-stakes stages before a winner is declared, with every participant having the chance to run the mast. To reach the second stage, though, they must grab the flag and the winner will be declared from the person who can grab it fasted in the final round.

Many competitors fall before they get anywhere near the flag and some even end up going too far and being unable to hold onto it before landing in the water.

Red Bull are encouraging students to dress up as part of the competition and entertainment and live music will be provided on the day, with it free for spectators to attend.
