Firefighters urged people living near a landfill site to keep their windows and doors shut while they tackled a blaze.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent four appliances to the scene in Meikle Drumgray Road near Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, when the alarm was raised at 6.51pm on Sunday.

SFRS advised motorists in the area who could smell smoke to keep windows and air vents closed and turn off air conditioning.

The fire service said: “Residents nearby and those who can smell smoke are advised to keep windows and doors shut.

“If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows and air vents closed and turn off air conditioning.”

Crews battled through the night, with the fire finally being brought under control in the early hours of the morning. 

Firefighters eventually left the scene at 8am on Monday morning.

There are no reports of any casualties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said this morning: “We were alerted at 6.51pm on Sunday, 18 August to reports of a fire in the open at Meikle Drumgray Road, Airdrie.

“Operational Control mobilised four appliances to the scene of a fire on a landfill.

“There were no casualties.

“Crews left the scene at 8.03am on Monday, 19 August after ensuring the area was made safe.”
