Karine Polwart, Duncan Chisholm, Shooglenifty and Eliza and Martin Carthy are among the names attending this year’s Tradfest in Edinburgh.

Chisholm, the Highland fiddler and composer, will open the festival on April 29, accompanied by a band made up of some of Scotland’s top instrumentalists, and supported by Scots singer of the Year nominee Beth Malcolm.

Over 11 days the festival will also host some of the biggest names of traditional music in the Traverse theatre and venues around Edinburgh.

The appearance of Eliza Carthy and her father Martin is likely to be particularly poignant after the recent death of Norma Waterson, Martin’s wife and Eliza’s mother.

Come All Ye, a new commission from Phil Alexander, will celebrate the impact that immigrants have made to the cultural life of Scotland.

Other Tradfest performers include folk bluegrass band The Shee, Finnish “nordgrass” fiddlers Frigg and Hebridean folk outfit Eabhal, while Karine Polwart will perform in collaboration with renowned jazz and folk pianist Dave Milligan.

Douglas Robertson and Jane-Ann Purdy, co-producers of Edinburgh Tradfest said: “We’re thrilled to be able to welcome back so many international acts this year to play alongside some of the very best musicians on the Scottish traditional music scene. The energy and buzz that audiences experience at a live gig is irreplaceable online and we can’t wait to be back in the thick of it all this festival. Roll on Friday April 29.”
