SCOTTISH runner Eilish McColgan ran the third fastest time ever for a British person as she stormed to victory in the 10km Great Manchester Run on Sunday.

McColgan’s time of 30 minutes 52 seconds cut almost a minute off her previous personal best of 31:48.

Her winning time puts her behind only running greats Paula Radcliffe and her own mother, Liz McColgan, for the fastest 10km race ever run by a British woman.

Radcliffe’s UK record of 30:21 was set in Puerto Rico in 2003, while McColgan senior’s best of 30:39 was set in Florida in 1989.

Eilish McColgan looked on course to beat Radcliffe’s record in the early stages of the Sunday race, completing the first 5km in just 15:01, but she slowed slightly in the second half.

“I probably set off a little bit too hard”, McColgan said after the race.

“I found it exceptionally tough but I’ve run a personal best. I can’t ask for much more really.”

She beat Meraf Bahta of Sweden, who came second with a time of 31:44, and fellow Brit Jess Piasecki, who came third with a time of 32:01.

The men’s race was won by 27-year-old English runner Marc Scott. Scott also ran a new personal best to win the race, coming in at 28:03.
