Parliament is being recalled in Wednesday amid the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have seized control after a 20-year hiatus from power.
The UK Parliament is currently on recess which means their weekly meetings are not generally taking place.
However, a special exception has been made in light of the events in Afghanistan which have escalated in recent days.
Here's everything you need to know about Parliament recess and what it means when it is recalled...
What are Parliament recesses?
Parliament recesses are breaks in the normal schedule when there are no meetings in the Chamber and no committee meetings.
The summer recess is often seen as a "summer holiday" for MPs, although it is unlikely they will take the whole recess to recuperate.
Do MPs continue working during Parliament recess?
The recess allows MPs to spend an extended period of time in their own constituency and therefore with their constituents.
MPs are likely to take advantage of this time to maintain or increase rapport with their constituents by attending local events and generally keeping a fairly high profile.
Recesses give MPs time to make the visits that they might in normal times be too busy to carry out.
Of course, they usually use the opportunity to take a holiday too; foreign affairs minister Dominic Raab cut his short this week to return to work amid the crisis in Afghanistan.
Do Prime Minister's Questions continue during recess?
No, Prime Minister's Questions do not continue during recess.
Can Parliament be recalled at any time?
Parliament can be recalled from recess on request of the Government at any time.
For example, Parliament was recalled during recess in April earlier this year following the death of Prince Philip to allow politicians to pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.
This summer, it has been recalled to discuss the ongoing situation in Afghanistan.
The Government is expected to outline their stance on the situation on Wednesday afternoon in front of MPs, giving other politicians the chance to scrutinize and debate the Prime Minister's plans.
Can I still contact my MP during Parliamentary recess?
Yes, you can still get in contact with your MP during recesses and they may table questions to ask when Parliament returns.
When does the UK Parliament recess end?
The UK Parliament takes recess from July 22 until September 6.
This differs from the Scottish Parliament, where recess commenced on June 26 and will conclude on August 29.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
