THEY have been a way of keeping people entertained and connected during lockdown. Whether sitting at home with the family or taking part online, quizzes have become even more popular while people have more time on their hands.

It is something which has proved to be one of the highlights of people’s weeks particularly for those who might be missing a pint and banter at their local pub quiz.

However, one established pub quiz firm has taken its challenges online and is now reaching hundreds of people a night.

Edinburgh-based Goose’s Quizzes runs around 40 pub quizzes in the capital and has tapped into a fan base online which has grown under lockdown.

Founder Andrew Wildgoose said: “Before Covid-19, Goose’s Quizzes mainly ran weekly quizzes in venues all over Edinburgh, additionally running corporate events on a regular basis and getting involved with charity evenings when the opportunity arose.

“But during challenging times, we must learn to adapt and from March 17, we began a nightly virtual pub quiz on Twitch. We now have more than 1,000 nightly participants representing over 30 countries around the world.

“We’ve even been able to continue our private quizzes for any size whether for friends and family or healthy competition with work colleagues.

“We try to make sure that every quiz we do is as entertaining as possible for the teams taking part, while still maintaining the down-to-earth attitude that we have become known for. Nothing flashy, nothing over the top, just a good quiz night that teams can enjoy whether they finish first or last.”

People have until 5pm the following day to submit their answers through a spreadsheet and then they announce the winner that night.

Wildgoose has a background in design and studied at Edinburgh Napier University. He did an undergrad in product design engineering then followed that up with a masters in interaction design. During the masters he started running pub quizzes and applied everything he was learning to the weekly pub quiz.

Eight years on the company has grown to become Scotland’s largest pub quiz company. About 45 quizzes per week are run across Edinburgh and Glasgow. In Edinburgh, it runs quizzes in The Hermitage, Malone’s, The Queens Arms and many more. Glasgow has a smaller market at the moment but it runs quizzes in Church On The Hill, The Raven and and Inn Deep.

As part of its nightly quiz it has a section which is designed to be a tough challenge and has been known to stump a few people.

Wildgoose added: “Below 50% of our teams got each one of the questions correct in some of hardest challenge sections and people do get very serious about it.”
