A police officer was taken to hospital after being struck by rocks while attempting to break up a group of youths at a building site.

The female officer was called to Newton Avenue in Cambuslang on Friday, April 24 at around 9pm, after reports a group of young people had come together despite the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

As police arrived, some of the people involved fled the scene, however, some of those who remained began to throw rocks at officers.

One policewoman was taken to Hairmyres Hospital to be treated for injuries and has since been released.

Four men - two aged 16, a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old - were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Around 9pm on Friday, April 24, officers were responding to a report of a number of youths loitering at the rear of a building site in Newton Avenue in Cambuslang. 

“On arrival, members of the group ran off, however, some individuals stayed behind and began to throw rocks at the police officers, resulting in a female officer being injured.

“She was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment and has since been released.

“Four males, aged 16, 16, 21 and 21 were arrested and charged in connection with the incident. 

“They are subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.”
