A Lanarkshire family is attempting to beat the lockdown blues - by creating their very own back garden takeaway.

The Cooks in Bellshill made a make-shift McDonald's drive-thru, complete with contactless 'payments' and Happy Meal boxes.

Little ten-year-old Ellie came up with the idea after seeing a similar video online, and decided the family had to try it out.

Mum Arlene, a paediatric nurse at Wishaw General Hospital, told The Herald the activity gave them all a chance to come together and do a fun, family activity.

"My husband and I are often working on each other's days off," she explained. "Wednesday was the first time in a while that we had time off together so we thought, why not.

"We're all a bit bored being stuck inside, and it was just great to work together on something and spend time as a family."

Husband Graeme took on the role as the server, making sure the 'orders' placed by Ellie and her seven-year-old brother, Ruaridh, were up to scratch.

They had printed out templates found online to create the food boxes, where they served chicken nuggets, ice cream and milkshakes.

"It was easier than I thought, and the kids were so excited about it," explained Arlene. "I don't know when we'll get free time like this again, so it's a great memory."
