THE outstanding achievements of colleges and universities across Scotland will be celebrated in a glittering awards ceremony next month.
Staff, students and academic leaders from some of the country’s top institutions will attend the prestigious event held to announce the winners of the 2019 Herald Higher Education Awards.
Scottish television and radio presenter Bryan Burnett will host the ceremony at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Wednesday, June 5.
The awards, now in their fifth year, recognise innovations in teaching and research, groundbreaking partnerships between institutions, industry and the wider community and diversity.
This year, the awards are supported by the Scottish Funding Council, Dixon Walter, Scotwest Credit Union, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), City of Glasgow College, technology provider Jisc, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Scotland and IT and consulting business, CGI.
Alex Mogull of CGI, said: “As a member of the judging panel it was clear to see the energy and passion that institutions put into their entries and I’m pleased to see so many of them recognised.”
Roy Gardner, vice-principal for corporate development at City of Glasgow College, said: “It will be a pleasure to spend the evening with some of the finest talent in our sector.”
Alan Walter, a partner with Dixon Walter, said: “We are absolutely delighted to support the equality, diversity and inclusion award and are very much looking forward to another great night of celebration.”
David McRiner, chairman of Scotwest Credit Union, said the board was looking forward to an “inspiring and thought-provoking evening”.
He added: “The opportunity to learn more about the work done by the finalists, not only in our category, but across all the awards on the night, will be very rewarding.”
Dr Ailsa Crum, head of quality and enhancement at QAA Scotland, said: “It’s great to hear about the work universities and colleges are doing and I’m excited to see the finalists on the night.”
Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive, said: “SQA is delighted to be sponsoring the Outstanding Business Engagement in Universities and in Colleges awards.
"I congratulate all the finalists and look forward to recognising them at the ceremony, and hearing about the innovative ways that they deliver employers’ workforce development needs together with enabling learner employability skills and experiences.”

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
