A two-year-old girl is fighting for her life after falling from the window of a third-floor flat in Clydebank.
Police are appealing for information following the incident yesterday afternoon in Dumbarton Road.
The incident occurred at around 2.10pm when the toddler fell from the window of a tenement block of flats near Boquhanran Road in the town.
Witnesses spoke of their shock following the fall.
One told our sister paper the Evening Times: “I don’t know the family.
“I just stay close and saw someone standing crying.
“She was in hysterics at the door.
“I don’t really know anything – it’s just tragic.
“It’s just really, really sad.”
Another neighbour living next door to the flat said: “These windows are very dangerous, they push right open.
“I think they do have a safety catch but, if it’s not on, they go wide open.
“It’s a bit scary, considering I’ve got a child.
“I can’t believe it.
“I hope she’s okay.”
The young girl was rushed by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow where hospital staff described her condition as critical.
Forensic officers were seen laying evidence markers outside the property around 5.30pm yesterday.
A large pool of blood could be seen on the pavement outside the flat.
Detective Inspector Steve Martin is now appealing for witnesses to
come forward and assist officers as inquiries continue.
He said the child had sustained “very serious injuries” and that his team were trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
He added: “As such, we are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the child fall or anyone who has seen her at the window prior to her falling.
“A number of people were in the area at the time and came to the assistance of the girl and it is important we speak to all of these people.”
Mr Martin added: “Therefore, if any of these people left before speaking to police, we urge them to contact police immediately.
“I also ask any motorists who were in the vicinity around 2.10pm today to check their dashcam footage to see if they have captured the incident.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police officers at Clydebank via telephone number 101, quoting incident number 1888 of April 10, 2019.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
