“YOUTHQUAKE” has been named as Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year following in the footsteps of “omnishambles”, “posttruth”

and “selfie”.

The word is defined as “a significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people”.

It saw a five-fold increase in usage between 2016 and 2017 in part due to the General Election.

The word itself is nearly 50 years old, having been coined by then Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to describe how youth culture was changing fashion and music.
