Former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale has left television reality show I’m a Celebrity 2017 after almost 12 days in the Australian jungle.

During her time on the show the MSP waded through fish guts, was covered in 50,000 bugs and drink vile cocktails made of blended bull, pig and ostrich anuses.

After being named as the second celebrity to be booted out of the camp, she told presenters Ant and Dec that while it was “so much fun”, she was delighted to go.

“I had 12 amazing days, I did everything I wanted to do and now it’s time to go,” she added.

The politician arrived late in the camp after fellow celebrities had already settled in. However despite hopes that she would be seen engaging in lively political debate, she failed to make a dramatic impact during her spell in the camp, while at home she faced criticism for her decision to take part in the ITV programme.

She told the presenters she had opted to join the programme to help dispel the myth that all politicians were middle aged men.

“It’s the biggest show in the UK and it was an opportunity for me to come on and talk about the things I care about and believe in,” she said. “I loved it.”

The former Scottish Labour leader will return home to answer criticism for leaving her Lothian constituents to take part in the programme.

During her time in the jungle she also faced a backlash within her own party, with new leader Richard Leonard commenting that he was "disappointed" that she had opted to take part.
