A Scots man has died in a skydiving accident in Thailand, it has been reported.

James McConnell, from Duntocher, was in Pattaya when he visited the skydiving centre on Thursday.

The 69-year-old leapt from a plane and landed in nearby water, missing the airstrip of the Thai Sky Adventures airbase.

Rescuers fought to save James but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Foreign Office was unable to initially confirm details but said consular assistance was available to family if needed.

James reportedly lives in Thailand and skydives regularly at the Pattaya centre with decades of experience behind him.

Colonel Chonnapat Nawalak of Nong Kham police in Chonburi said police were investigating how James died.

He said: ''Were still checking the cause of his death. 'He jumped from the plane and landed in the water, so we have to check whether he died from the jumping or from drowning.

“Officers were at hospital with him and the family. Paramedics tried to save him but he died.

“There are lots of different accounts of what happened. The foreign man landed in the water next to the runway. He should not have landed there but why we do not know.

''We’re investigating with the owner of the centre to find out exactly what happened.''

The British owner of the centre, Harry Harrison, today confirmed that a tourist had died but refused to comment further.  He said: “Yes, somebody died", reports the Greenock Telegraph.

In 2015, two skydivers from the same centre recorded a near-death moment when they came within inches of being killed by the plane they had just jumped from.

Instructor Forest Pullman and his tandem jumper had dropped from 13,000ft when moments later the plane narrowly missed them - clipping part of their parachute.
