Help for Heroes supporter Eileen Brawley is calling on Scots to rise to the occasion and help the annual Bake for Heroes campaign smash the million-pound mark.

Supporters of all ages and all around the UK have cooked up more than £850,000 for Help for Heroes (H4H) since the Bake for Heroes fundraiser began in 2009.

Now, as H4H prepares to mark its 10th anniversary in October, Ms Brawley says this year is the perfect opportunity to make the 2017 event the biggest ever.

The former Royal Navy nurse is looking forward to her second year of baking and fundraising for Bake for Heroes.

Last year she held a bake sale in her driveway and raised more than £800.

The 58-year-old, of Shieldhall, Glasgow, said: “I saw a post about Bake for Heroes on Facebook and I thought ‘I can do that’.

“I have been baking for more than 40 years so it’s something I really enjoy.

“Last year I had the bake sale in my driveway and I put up bunting and balloons.

“It was a fantastic day and I’m hoping to raise even more money this year.

“My favourite cake to make is gingerbread and it always goes down really well with my family and friends.

“I think Bake for Heroes is a really good initiative because it brings people together and gets people thinking about the work of H4H.

“You hear of so many troops not returning home and some of those who do return home are badly injured.”

Research by King’s College London and Help for Heroes, published in 2016, states that at least 66,000 Service Personnel and Veterans who served between 1991 and 2014 currently need, or will need, support.

The ingredients for success are simple – supporters simply sign up for a free fundraising pack through H4H to bake cupcakes, sponges, biscuits, flapjacks or whatever tasty treat they fancy, and sell them off to colleagues, family and friends.

All money raised goes to H4H supporting wounded, injured and sick personnel, veterans and their loved ones.

The Bake for Heroes campaign runs between April 15 and April 30, but supporters can take part whenever it suits them.

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, who is supporting the campaign, said: “I’m so proud to be a Patron of Help for Heroes. Every time I sit down and talk to our brave men and women, they tell me how much it means to know the public is behind them and their families throughout their recovery.

“I’m determined to help make sure that this vital support is there whenever it is needed.

“So please join us, it’s very simple to sign up and bake a difference.”
