MINISTERS are preparing for a crackdown on motorists who park irresponsibly on pavements and in disabled spaces using new powers transferred to Holyrood.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf launched a three-month public consultation ahead of a Transport Bill set for the autumn.

The consultation will also consider how to boost the use of ultra-low emission vehicles.

Holyrood has tried before to ban pavement parking and MSPs back the principle that it should be illegal on safety grounds.

However powers over parking were only fully devolved in last year’s Scotland Act.

Mr Yousaf said: “We know people are concerned about irresponsible parking and the misuse of disabled spaces and this is their opportunity to have their say.”
