COW and Gate has apologised after parents inundated the baby food company with complaints over finding mould and lumpy objects in pots of yoghurt.
Dozens of mothers and fathers buying fruit pots, as well as yoghurts and some formula powders, have been finding what has been described as 'disgusting' green mould despite the pots being in date.
Complaints have been made about finding objects such as a spider and live maggots in the popular product.
Shannon Agar, 19, from Stoke, one of many mums who have come forward with complaints about the product said she was getting ready to feed her son Fynlee, who is seven months old, when she discovered mould.
“I thought that it was disgusting," she said.
Now the baby food company has pledged to investigate all the complaints.
A company spokesman said: "We are really concerned to see parents’ comments about our fruit pots over the last few days.
"We will, of course, continue to investigate each individual complaint thoroughly, as we always do. Of the pots we have investigated most appear to have been accidentally damaged in transit or storage, for example, in some cases we can see puncture holes in the foil lid – this damage to the pot or lid has allowed air to get in and therefore mould has formed on the natural fruit contents inside.
"But we are very sorry, we want our foods to reach parents in the best condition and we continue to investigate every complaint. We have explained what we are doing to the parents who have contacted us."
The spokesman added: "The quality and safety of our products is our top priority and our factories maintain strict internationally recognised hygiene and production standards.
"We produce around 18,000 pots every day. It’s true that there will always be some instances where products don’t meet the high standards parents have come to expect. Occasionally this originates in our factory, but there may also be problems as products are transported and stored."
But in response another mother, Rachel Davis contacted Cow and Gate to say: "I had a problem with mould in a fruit pot and customer service was awful. I had to repeatedly contact them, was promisef some vouchers to replace the fruit pots and never heard anything back!"
The latest concerns were shared with one Clydebank mum, who in January, last year, raised concerns about mould.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
