SIX football fans were arrested during Aberdeen's 2-1 win over Celtic last night.

Police confirmed six individuals had been held by officers at Pittodrie in connection with a range of alleged offences.

One supporter was arrested in connection with an alleged sectarian breach of the peace and another was held over an alleged assault.

Police chiefs today praised the majority of the 20,000 fans who packed into Pittodrie for the game.

Chief Inspector Nick Topping, match commander, said: "Police Scotland was supported by Aberdeen and Celtic Football Clubs to ensure the experience was a safe and enjoyable one for the overwhelming majority of supporters.

"The match passed with no serious disruption or incident and this is testament to both the supporters home and away.

"Officers in attendance worked closely with partners and engaged with fans throughout the match.

"A small number of arrests were made, six in total, including one for a sectarian breach of the peace, an assault and four for minor drink-related offences, all within the football grounds.

"There were no major traffic issues and I would like to recognise and thank those who planned their journey to the stadium.

"I would also like to thank the public in the wider Aberdeen area for their patience, as I appreciate they would have been slightly delayed to allow the safe access of pedestrians to and from Pittodrie."
