DRIVERS have been urged to take care after heavy downpours flooded roads.

Torrential rain yesterday and overrnight led to standing water across the city also making for treacherous driving conditions.

Alan Morgan, who lives on Paisley Road West, said he was trapped in his flat for the whole day yesterday after nine inches of water blocked the front path leading to the entrance of his close, as shown in his video.

The pensioner said he reported the problem around 10am to council staff, and later contacted police after he noticed a car was blocking the drain on the road.

Around 11pm last night, council staff turned up and managed to drain the water, however Alan fears the same problem will happen again if the heavy rain continues.

He said: “It is mostly OAPs who live here, and people find it hard enough to get out at the best of times but yesterday was an absolute no-go.

“We couldn’t go out, there was about eight or nine inches of water outside the flats…I was worried it would flood my car.

“There is a history to this problem here, there are always leaves and there is very little back up to these being cleaned out.

“Every few months if there is heavy rain we’re confronted with the scenario we had yesterday.

“The owner of the car still hasn’t been notified and if the rain starts again we’re back to where we were.”

Cars and buses could be seen making their way through the deluge on Paisley Road West.

This morning, Traffic Scotland reported slow moving traffic on the M8 westbound from junction 10 to 19 and eastbound from junctions 29 to 19 with standing water causing problems for drivers.

The A77 outside Kilmarnock was closed after becoming flooded at the B7038 at Meiklewood.

A yellow Met Office weather warning for rain remains in place across Strathclyde, as well as central Scotland and the Highlands.

It is in force until 12noon.

Motorists are being urged to take extra care.
