The Government must reconsider its decision not to accept unaccompanied Syrian children who have made it to refuge in Europe, the Lords heard.

Baroness Butler-Sloss insisted Britain needed to do more to help children fleeing the war in Syria as she urged Ministers to reconsider restrictions on entry to the UK.

"We have a very good record, particularly at the beginning of the war at looking after children, and there are some that really do need our help as well as other countries," the cross-bench peer said.

Home Office Minister Lord Bates said: "The UNCR has cautioned against taking unaccompanied children into the country because they are particularly vulnerable."

The Tory peer added that under the Government's plan, children would be able to resettle in the UK with their families.
