A SCOTTISH POWER employee is backing the government's #GetChecked campaign after surviving a recent cancer scare.

Jacqueline Kay was diagnosed after she attended her GP concerned about an "innocuous" lump that appeared on her thigh.

The mark, which resembled a burn blister, turned out to be Myxoid Liposarcoma -- a rare soft-tissue tumour with a high risk recurring in other sites or in bones.

Yet shortly it was spotted, Ms Kay, from Cumbernauld, went under the knife and was given the all clear last month.

She displayed her checks at Cruachan Power Station alongside Calum McKimmon from the ScottishPower Pipe Band, to herald the company's support for the #GetChecked campaign.

The 46-year-old credits her life to early detection and is encouraging others to make a GP appointment if any lumps or marks appear.

Ms Kay who works in the marketing department at ScottishPower's Cathcart office in Glasgow, said: "I feel lucky that my cancer was caught early and hadn't spread anywhere else. It was isolated around the lump, so was able to be removed through surgery back in August.

"I didn't really think that the silly wee innocuous lump I found on my thigh could be anything to be concerned about, so it was a huge shock to discover it was cancer.

"If it hadn't looked so unsightly then I might have left it but, because it wasn't going away, I thought I had better get it checked by my GP.

"I would say to anyone go and get checked because the chances are it won't be anything to worry about and it will put your mind at ease.

"But, if like me, it's something serious, then it's better that it's caught early so treatment can start straight away."

ScottishPower is the latest company to lend support to the campaign and since 2012 has raised more than £8 million as part of a wider partnership with Cancer Research UK.

Neil Clitheroe, CEO ScottishPower Retail & Generation said: "Our commitment to making a difference stretches beyond energy. Our customers and employees like Jacqueline have shown amazing support for Cancer Research UK over the last three years, and their willingness to get involved in the fight against cancer is inspiring."
