Proposed job cuts at train operator ScotRail will be avoided after successful talks with management, according to a transport union.

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) had planned to ballot its members on industrial action over plans to axe controllers and train delay attributors.

The union said the cuts would have threatened the safe running of rail services and the ability to run services on time.

But TSSA rail chief Manuel Cortes said a way forward had been found to avoid job losses and assure passenger safety after talks with ScotRail Alliance managing director Phil Verster.

He said: "I am pleased at the outcome of this morning's talks and we can now move forward knowing passenger safety and jobs will not be compromised."

The ScotRail Alliance, a formal agreement between Abellio ScotRail and Network Rail, was set up in May to create a stronger relationship between the two.

Mr Cortes had previously said four jobs were to go within the controllers' grade and five train delay attributors would be cut, despite initial consultations with trade unions on the alliance "making clear" that no operational jobs would be lost.

A spokeswoman for the ScotRail Alliance said: "We are pleased about this morning's outcome and look forward to continuing work with the trade unions."
