A man has been charged with murder by police after human remains were found at a property in Montrose.

Police made the discovery on Wednesday night at a home in the Market Street area of the Angus town, having gone to the property as part of a missing person inquiry.

The remains have not yet been formally identified.

Detectives have described the incident as "extremely unusual" and said a large police presence would remain in the area for a while.

Officers today confirmed they have arrested and charged a 39-year-old man in relation to murder. He is expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court next week.

Detective superintendent David McLaren said: "There will be a large police presence in the area for some time as we continue with the complex investigation at a number of properties.

"This is an extremely unusual incident and I would like to reassure the public that it is a contained matter. A man has now been charged and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

"At this stage, formal identification of the deceased has not been done and further information will be released in due course."
