Human remains have been discovered at a property in Montrose.

Police went to a home in the Market Street area of the Angus town at about 11.55pm on Wednesday night as part of an inquiry into a missing person. They found what is believed to be human remains.

A man has been detained and is said to be helping officers with their inquiries.

Police Scotland said the investigation in the circumstances surrounding the discovery is in the early stages.

They are working to establish who the remains belong to and how the person died.

"Our inquiries have taken us to a number of address in the Montrose area where there is likely to be a police presence for some considerable time," the force said in a statement.
