A teenage boy has been removed from a school amid allegations he threatened a teacher with a knife.

The boy was understood to be in an home economics class when he started waving the knife around before allegedly threatening his teacher.

The knife had been lying on one of the classroom tables.

The 13-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was a pupil at Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.

The incident took place on August 27.

While he has not been expelled, he is currently under an indefinite suspension from the school.

The incident's revelation comes a week after the fatal stabbing of Aberdeen schoolboy Bailey Gwynne, 16.

Stonehaven and Lower Deeside councillor Raymond Christie said: "I wasn't aware of any incident like this taking place at the school, but if it did happen it's horrendous, and it shouldn't be going on."

A spokesman for Aberdeenshire Council said: "He has been excluded from the school for now and there is no date yet as to when he will be able to return."
