THE Stone Roses are to play next year’s T in the Park festival next year.

The Manchester band will top the bill on the opening night of the 2016 weekender in Strathallan, Perthshire, on Friday, July 8.

Speculation about a new album by the band and a new raft of tour dates had been mounting after posters of their lemon logo - which appeared on the band’s revered debut album in 1989 – suddently started appearing in Manchester.

Posters were seen at Manchester’s Close barber’s shop as well as the city’s Vinyl Revival record store with shopkeepers “sworn to secrecy about an announcement”.

Sixteen posters appeared in each store which fans guessed represented 2016.

Rock stars including Tim Burgess, lead singer with The Charlatans, had also tweeted lemons, helping to build the anticipation.

They will also play two gigs at Manchester's Etihad Stadium on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 June.

DF Concerts said a limited release of tickets for T in the Park would go on sale at 09:30 this Friday.

It is 21 years since the band last released an album, called The Second Coming.

Now fans are thrilled at the possibility of hearing a raft of new songs. The band last played the festival in 2012.
