Scotland has secured another world sporting event that is expected to give the economy a lift.

Athletes from all over the globe are to take part in the Climbing World Cup in Edinburgh for the first time next year.

Edinburgh Leisure said it has the Climbing World Cup for the largest indoor arena in Europe at Ratho on the outskirts of the city next September.

The council's arms length company is working with the International Federation of Sport Climbing and the British Mountaineering Council, the world and British governing bodies of climbing, to host the event which is expected to add hundreds of thousands of pounds to the local economy.

The total cost of this event is £300,000 and the council has been asked to make a contribution of £50,000 towards this, with discussions with Event Scotland are ongoing. National and specialist media will cover this, and the event will be streamed on the internet.

A report to Edinburgh City Council stated: "As well as enhancing the EICA’s profile and Edinburgh’s reputation, this event should stimulate local interest in climbing."

Edinburgh Leisure has also secured the European Climbing Championships in another first for Edinburgh, scheduled to take place at the EICA in September 2017 and £600,000 with contribution of £50,000 requested.

The climbing arena, built into the walls of an old quarry, is also home to the Scottish National Judo Academy.
