Police Scotland have launched an investigation after a poisoner killed two tanks of tropical fish worth £5,000 with washing up liquid in a house in Dumfries.

Police said the act of "wanton vandalism" was carried out after someone who entered the house in Ashton Drive at some point during the evening on Saturday October 24.

The motive of the attack at this stage is unclear.

Police said all of the fish in the the two fish tanks died after the contamination, though to have been washing up liquid.

A television and a phone were also damaged in this incident.

Lyndsey Nicolson, of Police Scotland, appealed for information from the public.

She said: "This is an awful case of wanton vandalism which has sadly cost the lives of a number of tropical fish.

"We want to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the Ashton Drive area of Dumfries on Saturday evening."
