A FORMER Radio Clyde DJ who confessed to sexually abusing a child while on an online chat has been jailed for three years.

James Russell, 56, was caught when a friend lured him into admitting his crime online.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that one of the user names Russell used online was "Peter.fyle".

The court heard Russell, formerly the voice of Motherwell Football Club, was in contact with a woman he believed was a stranger on a swingers website. He told her how he abused a schoolgirl before posting a photograph of the girl online - unaware that his friend knew the child.

Russell did not realise that the person he was chatting to was in fact a friend using a fake identity. She had been suspicious of him and carried out an internet search, finding him on a swingers' website before creating a fake profile which caught his attention.

His victim, now 16, told a jury how she had been indecently assaulted by Russell.

Russell, who had denied the charges, was convicted of using lewd and libidinous practices and behaviour towards the girl on a number of occasions between November 2009 and November 2010 when she was between 10 and 11 years old.

He was also convicted of sexually assaulting her on a number of occasions between December 2010 and March 2010, as well as taking indecent photographs of her.

Russell, from Govanhill, Glasgow was found guilty of possessing indecent images of children and sexual pictures of humans and animals.

Sheriff Sam Cathcart ordered Russell to be monitored in the community for two years after his release from jail due to the risk he poses to the public.

He was also placed on the sex offenders' register.

Russell did not work at Radio Clyde at the time of the offences.
