UNDER-FIRE cops are being investigated over a road crash which left a woman fighting for life.

Two people were injured after a car hit a wall in Airdrie on Friday.

The 30-year-old female passenger of the vehicle was critically injured, while the male driver, 33, was treated for minor injuries.

Now the force watchdog is probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It is understood the car had been signalled to stop by a marked police car in Glenmavis Road before the crash.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner confirmed a probe was underway.

A PIRC spokesman said: "The Commissioner is carrying out an independent investigation into the circumstances of a road crash in Airdrie on Friday October 16 after a 30-year-old woman and 33-year-old man suffered serious injuries.

"It is reported the accident happened after an attempt by police to stop the car the woman and man were travelling in.

"The matter has been referred to the PIRC by Police Scotland for investigation and a report on the findings will be submitted to the Deputy Chief Constable in due course."

It is the latest incident involving Police Scotland that PIRC has launched an investigation into.

The independent body has launched an investigation after an 18-year-old man was injured in an incident in Uddingston last month.

A probe was launched into the death of Sheku Bayoh, 31, who was restrained by police and later died in hospital.

PIRC is also investigating after a police officer failed to act on a potential tip-off about a missing pensioner with dementia.

Janet McKay, 88, went missing last month and her body was discovered in Clydebank around a week later.

Police Scotland's response to a report of concern about the welfare of two pensioners is also being investigated.

The body of Douglas Iggulden, 88, was found lying beside his wife Elizabeth, 89, who also later died.

Earlier this year, the deaths of John Yuill, 28, and Lamara Bell, 25, sparked a PIRC investigation.

Police Scotland failed to act on a sighting of their crashed car off the M9.
