Police have arrested a woman after a fire at an electrical substation in Glasgow caused a power cut which plunged the Pavilion Theatre and a nearby hotel into darkness.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in a lane at the top of Renfield Street, near the Herald and Evening Times offices, around 8pm on Friday evening.

The Pavilion was evacuated after the lights failed and a performance of comedy show ‘The Real Hoosewives Fae Glesga’ was abruptly halted.

Actress Nicola Park was about to perform ‘All by Myself’ and joked with the crowd while they filed out of the building.

She said: “I was standing there in the dark and nothing happened with the spotlight. Then I realised there was no microphone.”

Three fire engines were sent to the scene and firefighters used two water jets to bring the blaze under control.

The substation was badly damaged and has since been removed.

It was only installed a year ago after a fire destroyed another substation in the same lane in September 2014.

Power was restored to nearby buildings by 9.30pm on Friday night.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “A 44-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“She is in custody and will appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court tomorrow.”
