A CITY rape charity has announced plans for its annual march against violence towards women.

The Rape Crisis Centre in Glasgow will host the Reclaim The Night march on November 25 at 6pm.

Campaigners will gather at the Botanic Gardens in the West End, marching through the city in a bid to speak out against sexual violence.

The annual event typically attracts thousands of campaigners who are protesting against any form of violence against women.

It is part of a series of coordinated marches happening across the country, including in London, Cardiff and Newcastle. Last year’s Glasgow march on November 27 saw hundreds of men and women walk through the streets, from Botanic Gardens in the
West end through to the STUC  building on Woodlands Road.

The Glasgow Rape Crisis Centre’s patron, crime writer Denise Mina, made a speech as did the National Union of Students women’s officer at the time Vonnie Sandlan.

The idea originated when women in Leeds formed a Reclaim the Night group in 1977, to take action against rape and male sexual violence towards women.

It was particularly significant at the time due to the Yorkshire Ripper murders, where Peter Sutcliffe sexually attacked and murdered 13 women across the area between 1975 and 1980.
