SCOTRAIL has apologised after two services on the new Borders Railway were cancelled due to overcrowding.

It comes weeks after the operator was forced to add extra carriages to the trains running between Edinburgh and Tweedbank following complaints that some passengers had been left to stand for the entire hour-long journey when only two carriages were being used.

ScotRail cancelled two services on the route today and laid on replacement buses instead due to concerns about overcrowded carriages.

A spokeswoman for ScotRail said extra carriages have been added to trains during the October week school holidays "where possible".

She added: "As a result of large passenger numbers, some trains were delayed and this unfortunately led to the cancellation of two services.

"Bus replacements were sourced and called at all stations, and our ticket acceptance arrangement with Lothian Buses was in place.

"We're really sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our passengers, and thank them for their patience as we worked to get services back to normal."

The new line, which opened on September 6, was recently hailed a "soaraway success" after more than 125,000 journeys were made during its first month.
