SCOTLAND'S largest local authority has won an award for its effective traffic management during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow City Council picked up the Road Safety, Traffic Management and Enforcement award at the prestigious National Transport Awards in London.

The event, which was held at the Westminster Park Plaza, attracted more than 800 senior transport professionals.

The National Transport Awards recognises the people making a real difference to transport across the UK.

Glasgow Airport was also named UK Airport of the Year at the ceremony.

Councillor Alistair Watson, Glasgow City Council’s Executive Member for Sustainability and Transport, said: “We had a huge challenge in terms of planning and co-ordinating effective transport during the Games.

“It was a massive undertaking - moving around 6500 athletes and officials and more than one million visitors to and from Commonwealth Games venues, while keeping the city moving and minimising disruption for businesses and residents.

“Staff from across the entire council family put a great deal of work into delivering the Games and to win this National Transport Award is fantastic recognition and builds on our success having been named the Transport Authority of the Year at the Scottish Awards earlier this year.”
