CONTRACTORS have started bringing down the last two blocks of the Red Road flats.

Safedem began working on site today, mechanically demolishing the buildings.

As reported by the Evening Times, Sunday's blow down did not go according to plan, and two blocks were left standing.

Instead of 10 storeys remaining in all of the six towers, contractors were left with 13 still standing at Red Road Court and 11 remaining at Petershill Drive.

Staff are using special high-reaching machines to tear down the remaining 24 storeys, starting with Petershill Drive today.

They will weaken the steal frame enough that it can be brought down safely, and have set up an exclusion zone round the site.

The cordoned-off area also includes a buffer zone for debris and will allow for safe dismantling of the towers.

A GHA spokesman said: “Although two of the blocks did not fall exactly as predicted on Sunday, all blocks are now at a height that the demolition can be completed as planned.

“The contractor has now begun work on dismantling the remaining floors of the blocks. This work will be carried out under strict health and safety conditions and with minimum disruption to residents.”
