Aberdeen International Airport has reported a decrease in passenger numbers for September, with a total of 322,948 passengers travelling through the airport last month.

This figure was 6.2% less than the same period last year, and helicopter and domestic traffic also experienced a decline of 14% and 7% respectively.

But the airport did see a 0.5% increase in international traffic, which was boosted by the bi-annual Offshore Europe Exhibition and Conference held at the AECC in early September.

The airport has been further boosted by an announcement from Wizz Air, which confirmed it will introduce direct flights to the Polish capital of Warsaw in May 2016.

Airport managing director Carol Benzie said: "Domestic and helicopter traffic continues to be impacted by the lower oil price, however, we were delighted to see our international passenger numbers remain strong. This is largely due to the popularity of new routes that were introduced earlier in the year, namely Gdansk and Faro.

"We also received the welcome news in September that Wizz Air will launch flights to Warsaw next year, which will be the first time Aberdeen has had a direct link with the Polish capital.

"We have made a very encouraging start to October with a large number of passengers taking advantage of the school holidays to jet off for some pre-winter sunshine to destinations such as Orlando and Tenerife."

Aberdeen Airport's figures come after both Edinburgh and Glasgow Airport announced strong growth in passenger numbers during September.

Edinburgh Airport reported its busiest September ever, with 1,073,541 customers, and Glasgow Airport experienced its busiest September for a decade, with almost 900,000 passengers.
