THOUSANDS of Scottish commuters have dug deep and raised £5,000 for a leading cancer charity on their morning train journey.

Scotrail offered tea, coffee and cakes in return for a small donation on board their trains as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The money raised will be used to fund Macmillan’s vital cancer services including specialist nurses, a telephone support line and financial advice and help for cancer patients.

This year was the 25th anniversary of the event. It is Scotrail's third year participating, with the company raising more than £12,000 in that time.

Scotrail's catering operations manager Jackie Ross said: "The feedback on the day was extremely positive and it was great to raise much needed funds and have some fun at the same time."
