A man has appeared in court following the death of a woman in a road crash as she walked her dog.

Linda Carson died at the scene of the crash near Muirhouse Road, Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, on Sunday evening.

The 44-year-old had been walking her dog when she was hit by a car.

Darren Ferris, 24, appeared in private at Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he faced eight charges.

He faced a charge of culpable homicide or an alternative charge of contravention of section one of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

He is also charged with six other alleged contraventions of the same act, and with attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Ferris, of Motherwell, made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody, the Crown Office confirmed.

The case was committed for further examination and he is expected to return to court within eight days.
