AN elderly couple were assaulted in their own home in a targeted attack.

Detectives in Cambuslang are appealing for information after the pair suffered a "terrifying" ordeal at their home in Cairnswell Avenue.

At around 11pm hours on Sunday, the 81-year-old woman and an 80 year-old man were at home when two men forced entry, demanded money and assaulted them with a weapon.

The 81 year-old woman ran to the front garden and alerted neighbours who came to their aid as the suspects fled.

The pair left empty-handed through a lane leading to Rosebank Drive.

The elderly couple were treated at the scene by ambulance staff and did not require further medical attention.

Police are studying CCTV images and footage from the police helicopter, which was sent to the scene.

The suspects are described as local men, aged 20 – 40 and of medium height and built. At the time of the incident they wear wearing dark clothing with their faces covered.

Detective Constable Iain McCulloch of Cambuslang CID, said today: “This was a terrifying incident for this elderly couple to endure. It is incredibly fortunate that the woman managed to alert neighbours who attended immediately.

“Early indications suggest that this was a targeted attack.

"We are analysing available CCTV and footage from the Police Helicopter, which was immediately tasked to this incident.

"We are currently progressing door-to-door enquiries to establish if anyone in the area has any further information which could assist in the investigation.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have knowledge of this incident to make contact police at Cambuslang on 101.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
