A SCOTTISH woman has won the Miss Transgender United 2015 contest.

Jai Dara Latto, 22, a make-up artist from Walkerburn in the Scottish Borders tweeted about her victory in the top UK-wide event.

Ms Latto, who is a volunteer with the Scottish Transgender Alliance, Scottish Borders LGBT Equality and the TIE Campaign, won the Glasgow heat in August.

After being presented with her award at a glittering ceremony in London on Sunday evening, Ms Latto thanked organisers for what she described as a “life changing experience”.

In an interview with The Herald Magazine earlier this month, Ms Latto said she hoped to be a positive role model and use her voice to get transgender issues heard.

“It is a slow process,” she said. “The transgender community is where the gay community was around 10 or 15 years ago. We want to catch-up to that.”

She added: "People often look at us as freak shows, drag queens or view transgender as being a fetish. I want to show we are normal people, who go to work and lead simple lives."
