Three young men have been attacked by a gang armed with baseball bats in a busy Glasgow street.

Six men - who are believed to have jumped out of two cars before the attack - targeted the trio in the Tradeston area of the city.

Police today appealed to a woman, who helped the victims, to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The detective leading the probe described her as a "potentially very important witness".

She is believed to have driven one of the victims - a 22-year-old who suffered serious injuries - to his home to seek help.

He was later taken to hospital.

His two friends, aged 22-years-old and 27-years-old were also hurt in the attack, which is believed to have been sparked by a argument.

Detective Inspector Thom McKean, of Greater Glasgow, said: "A woman, who was in her car with two other friends, stopped to help the victims.

"I would ask the three women, who stopped their car and assisted the injured men, to come forward to police.

"We believe they were travelling in a purple or lilac car."

The attack took place in Paterson Street and Nelson Street, at around 9.20pm on Saturday.

The victims are believed to have been making their way from Paisley Road West to the Gorbals area when they were targeted by the weapon-wielding gang.

Police said the attackers, who are described as Asian, got out two vehicles - one which is described as a Black BMW with tinted windows.

Detectives are now carrying out investigations in the local area and reviewing CCTV footage.

DI McKean added: "Nelson Street is a very busy area.

"I would urge any witnesses to this incident, or anyone with information to contact police.

"Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101."
