A MAJOR search is underway after a man was reported missing after going for a swim near the Skye Bridge.

Andrew Gordon, 54, was last spoken to at 8.45am on Sunday and was in the area of the bridge at that time. Police believe he may then have decided to take to the water at Kyleakin for a swim.

He was reported missing by a family member at 12.30pm after failing to return, sparking an "intensive search" of the water between the Isle of Skye and the mainland.

The coastguard helicopter from Stornoway has been used to search the area around the bridge, while lifeboat crews from Kyle and Portree have also helped with the search operation.

Police have also been assisted by coastguard rescue teams from Kyle, Broadford and Portree, a police dog unit and the search and rescue dogs association.

Pleasure craft from nearby Kyleakin have also been used, while members of the public are also helping with the search.

Mr Gordon, who is from the East Lothian area, was last seen wearing a pair of grey combat trousers and a “Guns & Roses” hooded top.

He is described as being six foot tall, of muscular build, and has short shaved brown hair and a beard.

Anyone who has information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

The Skye Bridge is a road bridge over Loch Alsh which connects the Isle of Skye to the island of Eilean Bàn and the mainland.
