ROADWORKS which have caused hours of delays for drivers on the A8 are due to be lifted by 6am tomorrow.

Travellers faced heavy delays over the weekend as parts of the road were reduced to just one lane as part of the M8 improvement works programme.

Taking to social media, some road users complained of half hour journeys taking up to two hours, while some football fans travelling to the Celtic versus Dundee match on Sunday also complained of being late or missing the game.

On Saturday, Hamilton Academical FC also revealed they had to make a late team change in their match against Motherwell as defender Jesus Garcia Tena had been held up in the heavy traffic.

The club tweeted: "@jgtena4 was severely delayed by traffic on M8 Shotts-Newhouse, and we had to make late team change."

Meanwhile, traveller Kirsten Wright posted on Twitter: "Been in many M8 traffic queues but this one is #epic!!!"

While Jamie Hamilton also tweeted: "Took about 2 hours to get from Armadale to Motherwell with the traffic on the m8, wow."

Another driver, named only as Bob, also posted: "Avoid Travelling M8 nightmare of a journey #traffic Scotland."

A Transport Scotland spokesman said the congestion had worsened as the day went on on Sunday but confirmed that the one lane system would be lifted early tomorrow morning.

He added: "We've seen congestion around Eurocentral due to essential roadworks in the area - part of our £500m M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvement Programme.

"When finished the improvements will bring significant benefits to road users, reducing journey times and improving journey time reliability in and around Glasgow and across the central belt.

"Traffic management has been agreed with Police Scotland and the local authority and planned to minimise disruption as far as practicably possible.

"As always, we ask road users to plan their journeys in advance- live up-to-the-minute, 24/7 traffic information can be found on Traffic Scotland website, Traffic Scotland radio, and our roadside Variable Message Signs."
